Phys. Rev. A 77, 053815 (2008) [4 pages]Radiation from a dynamically deforming mirror immersed in the electromagnetic vacuumReceived 1 January 2008; published 19 May 2008 We study photon creation by a deforming mirror immersed in the electromagnetic field. The mirror radiates photons in pairs, and twins may have opposite polarizations. However, the total (angular) spectrum of photons is the sum of the (angular) spectrum of radiation from mirrors in a scalar field subject to the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. Windows of radiation are independent of the vectorial or scalar nature of the field. For a harmonic traveling wave on the surface with a frequency ωm and wave vector km, the spectrum is not symmetric with respect to ωm/2. This asymmetry of the spectrum depends on ωm and km, and is specific to the electromagnetic field. © 2008 The American Physical Society URL:
