Phys. Rev. A 72, 033406 (2005) [8 pages]Multidimensional laser cooling of broad- and narrow-line 0↔1 dipole transitionsReceived 12 November 2004; revised 23 May 2005; published 14 September 2005 We present a detailed study of laser cooling of neutral atoms with an electric-dipole transition between a Jg=0 ground state and a Je=1 excited state, for both broad- and narrow-line transitions. We focus on the novel effects arising from the multidimensional nature of the laser configuration and point out under which conditions these features can be observed in practice. Our analysis also shows that qualitative differences in multidimensional laser cooling properties exist between the broad- and the narrow-line transitions. © 2005 The American Physical Society URL:
