Phys. Rev. A 69, 054501 (2004) [3 pages]Bethe logarithm for the helium atomReceived 25 December 2003; published 7 May 2004 The Bethe logarithm is calculated for the S and P states of the helium atom. The calculations are based on variational expansion with randomly chosen exponents. The exponentially growing exponents in the variational basis set of the intermediate states were used to reach high convergence rate. This approach is similar to the strategy used by Drake and Goldman [ Can. J. Phys. 77 835 (1999)]. The estimated accuracy of obtained values is about 11–12 significant digits. © 2004 The American Physical Society URL:
