A 67, 063815 (2003) [5 pages]Decoherence of collective atomic spin states due to inhomogeneous couplingReceived 16 August 2002; published 26 June 2003 We investigate the decoherence of a superposition of symmetric collective internal states of an atomic ensemble due to inhomogeneous coupling to external control fields. For asymptotically large system, we find √N as the characteristic decoherence rate scale with N being the total number of atoms. Our results shed new light on attempts for realizing quantum information processing and storage with atomic ensembles. © 2003 The American Physical Society URL:
