In this work, a bound-state formalism appropriate for the study of positronium is presented. The formalism is based on a three-dimensional “quasipotential” equation derived from the Bethe-Salpeter equation. A reference kernel is proposed that contains the main physics of the nonrelativistic Coulomb bound state, and for which the quasipotential equation can be solved exactly. A perturbation theory for energy levels and decay rates based on this reference problem is described.
