Phys. Rev. A 60, 145–148 (1999)Laser addressing of individual ions in a linear ion trapReceived 10 December 1998; published in the issue dated July 1999 Single ions in a linear string have been addressed with a tightly focused laser beam and an acousto-optic deflector. The excitation into a long-lived metastable level is detected with a quantum jump technique. Single-quantum bit operations for quantum information processing with trapped ions are shown to be feasible. © 1999 The American Physical Society URL:
