The emission of electrons from metal clusters for fast excitation processes is studied, modeling Coulomb excitation through a bypassing ion. The time scales of the process and the trends with excitation energy are estimated within a simple model and computed in detail using a time-dependent density-functional formalism. The numerical study also allows one to estimate nonlinear effects. These are surprisingly small up to rather high excitation energies in the multiplasmon regime.
