Through measurements of the lateral multiple scattering of 50-keV O, Xe, and Pb ions in gaseous Ne, Xe, N2, O2, CO, CO2, and H2O targets, we have obtained information on the effects stemming from molecular spatial correlation between the target atoms that can be observed when energetic heavy particles are transmitted through thin targets. The experimental results are compared with the theoretical predictions of Sigmund and an overall agreement is found.
